Start with where the clog is
| Pattern | Likely location | Likely cause |
|---|---|---|
| One bathroom sink or shower | Trap or branch line | Hair and soap |
| Kitchen sink only | Trap arm and kitchen branch | Grease and food solids |
| Toilet only | Toilet trap | Paper volume, wipes, objects |
| Several fixtures, lowest floor | Main drain or lateral | Roots, defect, heavy buildup |
| Only during heavy rain | Lateral or public sewer | Groundwater infiltration or surcharge |
Why snaking alone often isn't enough
A drain snake punches a hole through a clog or pulls it out. That restores flow, but it leaves most of the buildup on the pipe wall. Grease and scale quickly catch new debris, and roots regrow from what remains. That is why clogs return within weeks.
Hydro jetting cleans the full pipe diameter and is often the better choice for grease and scale, provided the pipe is structurally sound. For roots and defects, a camera inspection determines whether a repair is needed.

Habits that cause recurring clogs
- Rinsing cooking grease down the sink, even with hot water.
- Flushing wipes, including those labeled flushable.
- Sending fibrous peels, coffee grounds and starchy food through a disposal.
- Not using hair catchers in showers.
When to stop clearing and start investigating
- The same drain clogs more than twice in a few months.
- Several fixtures are affected.
- The home is older and has clay, cast iron or Orangeburg sewer pipe.
- Large trees grow near the sewer path.
Frequently asked questions
Do chemical drain cleaners prevent clogs?
Caustic cleaners can open minor clogs but can damage older pipes and do not remove buildup reliably. Enzyme cleaners are gentler for routine maintenance.
Can a vent problem cause slow drains?
Yes. A blocked vent can slow drainage and cause gurgling because air cannot enter the system to replace draining water.
