Main Sewer Line Cleaning

Whole-house backups and multiple slow fixtures caused by a blockage in the main drain or sewer lateral.

What it isThe main sewer line carries all of a home's wastewater to the city sewer or septic tank. When it clogs, the symptoms appear in more than one place at once, usually at the lowest fixtures first. Clearing the main is done through a cleanout and is often followed by a camera inspection, because main line clogs frequently have a structural cause.

When you need main sewer line cleaning

  • Several fixtures slow at the same time
  • Water coming up in a basement floor drain or ground-floor shower
  • Toilets gurgling or rising when a washer or tub drains
  • Standing water visible in the exterior cleanout

How it works

  1. Locate the main cleanout, usually outside near the foundation or in a basement.
  2. Relieve backed-up water carefully, because the cleanout may be under pressure.
  3. Run a large-diameter cable machine with a cutting head, or a jetter, toward the street.
  4. Confirm flow with a sustained water test.
  5. Run a camera to identify roots, breaks or sags that would cause the clog to return.

Limits and when it’s not the right fix

  • Clearing a root-blocked line restores flow but does not seal the joints roots entered through.
  • Collapsed or broken pipe cannot be cleaned open and needs repair.
  • Homes without an accessible cleanout may need one installed for safe, repeatable access.

What affects the cost

We don’t publish national price figures because real quotes vary too much by region, access and the condition of your system. These are the factors that move the price:

  • Cleanout location and condition
  • Distance to the blockage
  • Roots versus soft blockage
  • Camera inspection
  • Whether a new cleanout is installed

Ask for a written quote that names the method, materials and any permit or restoration work before work begins.

Main Sewer Line Cleaning: common questions

How do I know if my main sewer line is clogged?

The clearest signs are multiple slow drains, water rising in the lowest drain when another fixture runs, and gurgling toilets. A single slow sink is usually a branch line issue instead.

Where is the main sewer cleanout?

Most often it is a capped pipe outside near the foundation on the side facing the street, or a capped fitting on the main stack in a basement or crawl space. Some older homes do not have one.

Who is responsible for the sewer line, me or the city?

In most U.S. cities, the homeowner owns the lateral from the house to the city main or to the property line. The exact boundary varies by municipality, so check with your local public works or utility department.

Should I get a camera inspection after main line cleaning?

If the line has clogged before, the house is older, or there are large trees near the sewer path, yes. The camera shows whether the cause was a soft blockage or a pipe defect that needs repair.
